Whatever it sounded like with the noise and the background stuff is what it's going to be. LEWITT: Do you record in your home and then bring it to a studio to redo it?īlanco Brown: I never really re-record anything. I use a (Universal Audio) quad for my recording, and I work mainly out of Pro Tools for recording vocals and Logic for recording tracks. Even my dad played on my last album.īlanco Brown: Well, usually, I start most riffs with a guitar, Fender being my choice. I have my go-to's, and it's only about four or five of us, and we just make it come to life. LEWITT: Do you have a musical collaborator or specific musicians that you rely on to interpret your vision for you?īlanco Brown: Yeah, definitely. The lyrics come as I lay a melody on the actual track. Every song just about starts with just the melody, no words. Sometimes, I have a musician around me with great chops that I know will quickly pick up what I need. Sometimes, I'll play around with it enough to just to come up with something dope. I play guitar, but I'm not like the greatest. I hum it, and I have someone strum it or I play it myself, just depending. LEWITT: What does your production process look like? What's the journey when you produce a track?īlanco Brown: Sometimes, I start with the track, and sometimes, I start with just the melody. So the advice I'd give is, don't stop and just keep on making great music! I picked up a lap steel guitar in September 2018, created The Git Up, and leaked it on April 19th, 2019, while dancing to it. Before you know it, it took off. There were records like Country Time, Georgia Power, Tn Whiskey that got me my deal through BMG and Broken Bow Records. The Git Up was the last record I did on my album, and I didn't get signed because of that record. LEWITT: What kind of advice do you have for people trying to get their music out there on social media? Are there any special tips that you can give them on how to promote their own music?īlanco Brown: I say keep creating, make something great, and let the people choose it. You can make something in your bedroom, and you can post it on the web anywhere, and it could take off before you know it. He said he wasn’t concerned about anyone saying it wasn’t country enough.LEWITT: What do you think about as an artist, how social media influences music these days?īlanco Brown: Social media is so powerful. “The whole time I had been building my sound and I was like, ‘It’s in the same vein.’ So that just gave me like a sense of ‘OK, there is an appetite for this.’”īut unlike Lil Nas X, Brown’s song has not been removed from Billboard’s country charts. “People heard that record and they were just looking for something close to it,” Brown said. “It felt so fine and I was like, ‘People got to dance to this,’” Brown said.īrown said “Old Town Road,” which is spending its 14th consecutive week on top of the Hot 100 chart, opened a lot of people’s ears to the music he’s been passionate about. 16 on the all-genre Hot 100 chart, became viral similar to “Old Town Road” on the social media app TikTok, where people have recreated Brown’s dance moves or added their own dances and tagged it to #TheGitUpChallenge. “I remember growing up in the hood and my grandmother saying, ’Ya’ll better git up and do ya’ll work,” Brown said. He named the song after a saying he heard from his childhood. 1 on Billboard’s Hot country songs chart in just five weeks. He was experimenting with a different tuning on the lap steel when he came up with the twang that he looped throughout “The Git Up,” which has shot to No. His songs combine trap music styles such as 808 drum machines, aggressive synths and tempo with melodic strings, lap steel and guitar and lyrics about Southern culture. His music caught the attention of BBR Music Group, a Nashville-based record label with artists like Jason Aldean and Zac Brown Band, which put out his self-titled EP in May. Brown kept working on his combination of hip-hop and country, which he likes to call “trailer trap,” while also songwriting and working as a vocal producer for Grammy-winning acts like Fergie and Monica.
